What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a non-insulin injection for high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes. It comes in pre-filled pens and is for patients who cannot use other diabetes medications like Metformin. Combine it with a healthy diet and exercise for effective blood sugar management. It’s not for type 1 diabetes; consult your GP if you need treatment for that.

You can purchase Ozempic at HealthExpress for type 2 diabetes. Complete a short, confidential consultation questionnaire, which our doctors will review.

*How does Ozempic work?*

Ozempic helps control blood sugar (HbA1c levels) using semaglutide, a GLP-1 analogue. It boosts GLP-1 hormone levels, enhancing blood sugar management through three main actions:

– Promotes insulin production from the pancreas when blood sugar is high.

– Reduces excess glucose production from the liver.

– Slows stomach emptying and food digestion.

*What are the benefits of taking Ozempic?*

Ozempic significantly lowers HbA1c levels. Research shows that 82% of patients achieved target HbA1c levels. You only need to inject once a week. It also benefits cardiovascular health by lowering the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death in adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Ozempic can aid weight loss but is not prescribed solely for that purpose.

*What dosage should I take?*

Start with a 0.25mg dose once weekly for 4 weeks. After that, increase to 0.5mg for at least 4 weeks. If needed, the dose can increase to 1mg weekly, which is the maximum. Consult your GP before starting Ozempic, and maintain a stable dosage for at least 6 months before purchasing the higher doses.

*How do I administer Ozempic?*

Take Ozempic weekly at the same time. If you need to change the day, do so only if your last dose was 2 days ago. Inject into your thighs, lower abdomen, or upper arm.

1. Prepare the pen and needle—check the name and solution color, and use a new needle.

2. Attach the needle—remove the paper tab, twist it onto the pen, and dispose of the inner cap.

3. Check the flow—turn the dose selector until it shows the flow check symbol, hold the pen with the needle up, and press the dose button until the counter returns to 0. A drop should appear.

4. Select the dose—turn until it shows 0.25mg, 0.5mg, or 1mg.

5. Inject the dose—insert the needle, press the dose button until it shows 0, and count to 6 before removing the needle.

How does Ozempic work?

Ozempic injections work to control your blood sugar levels (HbA1c levels). They contain the active ingredient semaglutide which is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like-peptide-1) analogue. It belongs to the same family as liraglutide (Saxenda).

GLP-1 analogs work by increasing the levels of GLP-1, a type of hormone called incretin hormones. These hormones are responsible for three main processes in blood sugar level management:

promotes insulin production from the pancreas when your blood sugar levels are too high

reduces excess glucose production from the liver when it is not needed

slows the rate at which the stomach empties and digests food

These combined effects are clinically proven to lower your blood sugar levels.

What are the benefits of taking Ozempic?

Ozempic injections have been clinically proven to lower HbA1c levels. Clinical research has shown that up to 82% of 288 patients taking Ozempic reached their target HbA1c level, a success rate that was significantly higher than in other treatments. In addition, although many may feel some anxiety about administering injections, you only need to administer one injection, once a week.

Ozempic injections also have good implications for your cardiovascular system. It has been found to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks, strokes or death in adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease.
